Victor Gonzalez

Victor is a character from the neighborhood who works at the Brooklyn Brass & Reed Repair shop on a part-time basis. He actually grew up in this area on Nevins street. He left the neighborhood in 1967 when he enlisted in the United States Airforce. He was sent to Amarillo Texas for basic training then to Topeka Kansas, where he learned heating, air-condition and refrigeration. He finished his 4 year enlistment in 1971 and settled in the mid-west area where he married and started a business, “Vic’s Heating & Cooling“.Victor stayed in Missouri until 2010 when he returned to Brooklyn to help with his aging mother.

Victor loves music and is a amateur conguero. He took conga lessons with Pablito Rosario, a childhood friend who is now a world renowned percussionist. Pablito has played with Tito Puente,Mongo Santamari, Willie Colon and David Bowie to name a few. Pablito now lives in Puerto Rico but Victor still stays in touch with him. Amigos viejo!!

As I mentioned Victor is a huge music fan and is the un-official manager of my group “ruben & latin soul”. We play boogallo music. He is always searching for new material for us to perform. Victor is also a big fan of the post bop sound of Lee Morgan.

Victor lives in Crown Heights Brooklyn but makes his way to Carroll Gardens each morning where he has breakfast at Franks on smith street then he usually makes his way to Brooklyn Brass & Reed repair shop where he works until 2.00pm usually. He works on clarinets, saxophones and flutes.

I allow Victor to hang out at the shop mostly for entertainment value. I am sorry to say that he keeps the radio tuned to Rush Limbaugh and that he is a Donald Trump supporter. He also considers himself a border line genius, (BLG).

There is a long list of things that Victor lives by but I can’t think of any right now.

If we have time sometimes after lunch we play a little music together.
